FAQ & Troubleshooting

Why can't my devices find each other?

Deskdrop relies on Multicast DNS (mDNS) to discover peers. Ensure both devices are on the exact same local Wi-Fi network (or mobile hotspot). If you are using a corporate, university, or public network, "Client/AP Isolation" might be enabled, which intentionally blocks device-to-device communication.

Do I need to configure my Windows Firewall?

Yes. By default, Windows sets new networks to "Public", which blocks mDNS discovery packets. You must either set your Wi-Fi network profile to "Private" in Windows Settings, or explicitly allow the Deskdrop executable through the Windows Defender Firewall.

Are my files sent to the cloud?

No. Deskdrop is a 100% zero-cloud application. All data is transferred peer-to-peer over your local network interface using ChaCha20-Poly1305 AEAD encryption. We do not run any relay servers or STUN/TURN infrastructure.
